WORTH CONSIDERING:
In
our Western 'politically correct' society there have been numerous past
examples of rejection of the reasons for some of our public holidays -
especially Easter and Christmas. It has become almost 'fashionable' to
have all sorts of Christmas scenes and displays EXCEPT for nativity
displays that might give a hint of the real reason for the season - which
remains: Jesus Christ.
The tide is turning back to
some sensibility and acknowledgement of our religious heritage. In
Victoria, Premier Steve Bracks gave official endorsement for nativity
scenes, Christmas carols, and other Christmas traditions in the State's
schools. The Western Australia Education Minister, Ljiljanna Ravlich,
publicly encouraged State schools to teach and observe Christmas
traditions. She stated: 'While WA is a multicultural society, it is
predominantly Christian and I think it is important that students
celebrate the birth of Christ. I would be very surprised if there were
public schools out there that didn't celebrate Christmas in one way or
another.'
The West Australian
newspaper even asked readers to 'dob in' shops and places that were too
politically correct' and refused to have nativity scenes and the like.
While it is appropriate to
voice our Christian concerns about those who deliberately seek to reject
the Christian heritage and background of special holidays such as Easter
and Christmas, it is even more important that we acknowledge, with praise
and appreciation, where such heritage IS given acknowledgement.
When we see Christian
expressions of Christmas (nativity scenes, carol singing, and the like)
let's acknowledge our appreciation with shop, and shopping centre,
management. Let's become known as complimenting Christians and not just
complaining critics. |
